Oakland Legacy Project

The Oakland Legacy Project, ArtEsteem’s in-house after school leadership cohort, supports youth in developing powerful, educated voices for social and environmental justice in their communities.

Students are able to work side by side with experienced artists, environmentalists, farmers and activists, all who support them in their journeys as young visionaries.

Throughout the year we delve into our own ancestries and the history of the land we occupy, learn urban farming techniques, create art, and take field trips with the goal of creating a deeper connection with our land and one another.

The after school cohort is open to students aged 13-18, with the opportunity to earn $500+ stipends from consistent participation.

“This space allows us to experience self-empowerment … and to create a better society as a whole. Being a part of this group is truly a blessing … [it] gives me a source of comfort or a feeling of safety rather than fear. With thoughtful peers and adults by my side… [I receive] warmth in our coldhearted environment.”

— Sierra K, 10th grade

The 2025-26 cohort has begun!
